The SYO began in 2000 as a youth orchestra of string and woodwind players from the Shoalhaven, on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. It was made possible by a generous grant from the Shoalhaven Arts Board.
In 2001 the SYO expanded to include a Preparatory String Orchestra, which has since been renamed the Shoalhaven Junior Strings (SJS) and is directed by Jo Landstra. No audition is necessary for this group, which comprises young string players (6-12 yrs of age approximately), who have only been playing a short time.
Under the musical direction of Jacqui Hitchcock, the SYO has performed at many events throughout the Shoalhaven region, and has also played in Sydney and Canberra.
The SYO performs at diverse functions in various combinations, from Quartets at weddings and small functions, to a combined orchestra at our annual Christmas Concert.
Rehearsals are held every Friday afternoon, 3:45-4:30 for SJS, and 4:30-6:30 for SYO.
New members are always welcome.
